Expatriates covered under Social Security in Malaysia

Effective January 1st, 2019, expatriates and foreign workers in Malaysia are eligible for medical benefits, disablement benefits, dependent’s benefits, constant-attendance allowance, and RM 6,500 for repatriation costs including funeral under the Employment Injury Scheme.

What does this mean?

Malaysian employers who hire foreign workers and expatriates must register their employees with the Social Security Organization (SOCSO) and contribute to the Employment Injury Scheme. Employer contribution to the plan is required at 1.25 percent of the employee’s monthly salary. However, employee contribution is not required.
